Search Engine Optimization or shortly called SEO is the process that makes a website listed on the top of the search results page when a user searches about something related to the website’s content. Organic SEO processes cannot be done instantly. It takes time and constant attention to make a website appear on the top of the results page.

Keyword SEO is the method of adding suitable, trending keywords in site contents to uplift the place of the search results page.

Keywords

What is a keyword? Keyword is a word/phrase a user types in the search bar to search something. Such as “software development”, “online meeting apps”, “how to learn python online”.

If someone has a website that publishes about java coding, they must target keywords such as “Java”, “java coding”, “java coding tutorial”. But let’s not get a conclusion there. Because keywords must not be added instantly. Let’s see about that.

Two types of Keywords

There are two types of keywords,

  1. Short tail keywords/broad keywords – this type of keywords have one or two words, but the range of results of the keyword is very broad. They are used more frequently.
  2. Long tail keywords – this type of keywords have more than two words, sometimes upto eight/ nine words. The meaning is more specific and the range of the result is very narrow.

As an example, “java” is a short tail/ broad keyword. The person who searches this might want to download a java development kit, do a java troubleshooting, download java ide or learn java coding. So the search engine will show various, mixed results in the results page.

“Java coding tutorial for beginners” is a longtail keyword. The desire of the user who searches this, is very clear and specific. So the search engine will show the results for coding beginner tutorials. Results for downloading java development kit won’t be shown.

What keywords should be targeted first?

If you are doing seo for a new website. You should always target for long tail keywords. And if you are doing seo for a website which has a decent visitor base, returning viewers you can try to add broad keywords. But targeting for long tail keywords at the beginning is a good strategy regardless of the status of the website.

Why target the long tails keywords at first? Let’s discuss it in the next article of the series. See you soon.
